The cover of The Roots of Goodness by Kosho Uchiyama Roshi, featured in Balanced Achievement’s article 5 Insightful Buddhist Books Released in February 2025.

5.) The Roots of Goodness — Kosho Uchiyama Roshi:

It was in the mid-13th century when Eihei DĹŤgen Zenji, the revered Buddhist priest who helped introduce and popularize SĹŤtĹŤ Zen in Japan, compiled his masterwork, Treasury of the True Dharma Eye. Among its 95 illuminating passages, The Eight Qualities of a Great Person stands as his final teaching—a profound reflection on the virtues that naturally arise from attaining true wisdom and awakening. In The Roots of Goodness: Zen Master Dogen’s Teaching on the Eight Qualities of a Great Person, an insightful commentary on DĹŤgen Zenji’s parting words written by the late great Zen master KĹŤshĹŤ Uchiyama RĹŤshi is presented. With clarity and precision, Uchiyama RĹŤshi reveals how we can cultivate these essential qualities—such as having few desires, practicing wisdom, and making diligent effort—nurturing the foundation of genuine goodness in our own lives. He writes:

For me, the transmission of the qualities of a great person means that exactly those qualities the Buddha practiced are what the Buddha passed on to others who, in turn, continued to pass them on to Dōgen Zenji, Sawaki Rōshi, Uchiyama Rōshi, Takamine Rōshi, and to me. What is critical to keep in mind is that these eight qualities are not something that the person doing them is aware of. In other words, these qualities are not something that one wears on one’s sleeve or is proud of enacting. In a dharma talk Sawaki Rōshi gave, he said that he had had several major satori experiences and several smaller ones, but in the end, they don’t amount to anything at all. I think this attitude applies to having few desires, knowing one has enough, appreciating serenity, and all the other qualities.

The cover of The Armor of Fearlessness by Stephen Clarke, a book on cultivating authentic presence and fearlessness through Buddhist virtues, featured in Balanced Achievement’s article 5 Insightful Buddhist Books Released in February 2025.

3.) The Armor of Fearlessness — Stephen Clarke:

For centuries, Buddhist traditions have taught that true courage arises not from power or dominance but from the luminous fearlessness cultivated through the paramitas—the perfections of the heart and mind. In The Armor of Fearlessness: Discovering the Virtuous Mark of Authentic Presence, Buddhist teacher and psychotherapist Stephen Clarke, Ph.D., offers an thought-provoking contemplation of these ego-transcending virtues and their transformative potential. With astute commentary and practical guidance, Clarke illuminates how embodying qualities such as generosity, patience, and discipline awakens a state of fearless, authentic presence. Grounded in both Buddhist wisdom and psychological insight, this book serves as a profound guide for cultivating courage through inner transformation. Clarke writes:

We usually define health and sanity as not being sick, but true health and sanity is before there even is the possibility of sickness. True health is present even when there is one of the various maladies present too. This is what this book is about, rediscovering what is right with us and how to cultivate this natural health, sanity, and wisdom. True health and sanity are found in the basic space of being, and the path to realizing and cultivating this is developing the transcendent virtues until the state of buddhahood, or fearlessness, is uncovered.

The cover of Right Here With You, an anthology on mindful relationships featuring teachings from leading Buddhist teachers, psychologists, and spiritual writers, highlighted in Balanced Achievement’s article 5 Insightful Buddhist Books Released in February 2025.

2.) Right Here With You — Andrea Miller & Editors of Lion’s Roar:

In a world of constant distraction, Right Here With You: Mindfulness for Connection, Communication, and Deepening Our Relationships offers a timely reminder of the sacredness of presence in our interactions. Compiled by Andrea Miller and the editorial team at Lion’s Roar magazine, this anthology gathers insights from over 30 renowned writers, psychologists, and spiritual teachers—including Thich Nhat Hanh, Tara Brach, Joseph Goldstein and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Through teachings on mindful presence, deep listening, and loving speech, the book provides a transformative guide to fostering deeper, more meaningful relationships. Miller writes:

For better, for worse, and for all the moments in between, my hope is that Right Here With You can offer some perspective. I know that, because of the pieces in this anthology, I’ve gained a greater understanding of what it means to be intimate and how mindfulness can deepen connection. But—word of warning—none of the contributing authors offers a quick, easy path to finding perfect love. Rather, they offer something more realistic and ultimately, I believe, more satisfying: a mindful approach to relationships that takes practice and time.

The cover of Sacred Places, Sacred Teachings by Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen, a featured book in Balanced Achievement’s article 5 Insightful Buddhist Books Released in February 2025.

1.) Sacred Places, Sacred Teachings — Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen:

Esteemed Buddhist master Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen invites readers on a profound pilgrimage through India’s most revered Buddhist sites in Sacred Places, Sacred Teachings: Following the Footsteps of the Buddha. From Bodh Gaya to Sarnath, each sacred location serves as both a historical landmark and a gateway to deep spiritual insight, linking the Buddha’s journey with practical teachings for modern practitioners. Gyaltshen’s heartfelt narrative illuminates the significance of these places while offering guidance on integrating the Buddha’s wisdom into daily life. Part spiritual travelogue, part meditative guide, this book inspires readers to walk the path of enlightenment with greater awareness and devotion. Gyaltshen writes:

A Pilgrimage is unlike any other form of travel, and certainly any other activity from our daily life. If we recognize this from the start and appreciate our journey as a way not only to trace the Buddha’s life, but also to appreciate how beings have benefited from his activities, then a pilgrimage becomes so joyous… Pilgrims don’t travel as tourists do, taking pictures and sightseeing, just looking a place over and quickly leaving for the next one.  At each place we can reflect on the Buddha’s wisdom and take the opportunity to appreciate how precious his teachings are now and have been for centuries.
